Shiny Red Ball Syndrome is my made-up-fun-phrase for describing someone that loses focus easily. Example, a shiny ball rolls by, you go chase it no matter what you are doing (I’ve chased shiny balls…that sounded really, really wrong).
Signs you have shiny red ball syndrome:
-You are working on something, another something comes up and you lose focus.
-You can’t focus on one major project for any lengthy amount of time (5 years? 5 months? 5 hours? 5 days? 5 minutes? 5 seconds?)
-You have a ton of unfinished projects.
-You start a project and then lose interest.
-You probably stop reading this article about…..now…and go do something else.
There is nothing wrong with having shiny red ball syndrome if you get things done, BUT if you are moving from task-to-task, project-to-project too quickly, it is likely you are not raking in the big bucks. Trust me, I’ve done it. You have a great idea, you get it going, and BOOM something else pops up and you repeat the cycle.
There is a difference between multi-tasking and multi-wasting-your-damn time.
Here are some tips for turning your red ball (insert joke here) into a green one ($):
1. Break It up: Break down your day into different SMALL segments and put a time limit on them. I.E: 8AM-9AM Email. 9AM-10AM phone calls. Breaking it up will keep you on track for short attention bursts.
2. Idea List: Have an idea list on your computer. Keep it on your main page and keep it open. When you have a random thought, idea, whatever and don’t want to forget it, type it into the idea list and go back to what you are working on. You can always flush out the ideas later.
3. Idea Hour: If your head is spinning like a top, try an idea hour at the end of your work day. Sit down, just let the ideas flow and write them down. Build it into your schedule.
4. Find A Partner: I’m not a huge partnership fan, but this is one of those cases where it could be smart to partner with someone more regimented and focused. Try not to kill each other.
…. Wait, what as I talking about? I’m supposed to be doing something else right now…working on The Rise To The Top website!
