Think of about this for a second, you can shoot video with an inexpensive camera and upload it for free online for the world to see. Read that again.
Pause.
I believe we have underestimated the power of what online video can do for your business.
It is no longer just about the cat on the skateboard or the Spielberg online production.
From citizen journalism to online shows, there is an opportunity for nearly every business. Now, I’m not saying there isn’t hard work involved, of course there is (especially promoting), but the tools have never been easier to use.
For example, yesterday and earlier today I was on the front page of CNN talking about the iPad with quotes and a video I made (I promise to do a video next week on how I pulled this off). I know, crazy. I’m not saying this as shameless plug of bragging stupidity, but as an example that great content can be cheap to produce and the best stuff (pun intended) will rise to the top.
Here is the CNN home page. See my crazy mug towards the bottom?
That being said, the goal of videos shouldn’t be viral. Instead, functional for your business whether the goal is to educate, inspire, sell, recruit, entertain, introduce and many other functions.
First you need your weaponry:
It really is as easy as 1,2,3,4,5:
- Camera (which can be as easy as Flip Camera or Kodak Zi8 or even an iPhone)
- The Internet + Distribution Method (such as Blip.TV and Youtube or a solution such as Widget Realm or Brightcove)
- An Idea
- Promotional Strategy
- Monetize
1. Interviews: Thought-leaders, customers, related to your industry, adds fun and personality.
2. Tips & Tricks: Related to your business.
3. Behind-The-Scenes: How things are made, a look behind the curtain.
4. Product Demo/Screencast: Keeping it authentic and not PR or tech-speak. Walk through your produce with a screencast of your computer screen. We are experimenting with Screenflow soon and I’ll make sure to put up some screencasts.
5. Video Contest: If you have a tiny bit of a tech-savvy crowd, try a video submitting content like The Best Job In The World. Remember to choose a prize your audience will actually like (on that note, congrats to the winner of the Google Nexus One phone from our contest Sarah Bandy).
6. Introducing: Simple. Introduce yourself on your website and your company. Have other team members introduce themselves as well. Add some personality.
7. Facebook Q&A: It is so easy to shoot video on Facebook. Try springing discussions with friends and followers by adding video to your page. Ask a question and spring on delicious discussion.
Give it a shot. Try it out. Don’t over plan and see if you can make video work for you and your business.

1. Update All Of Your Social Networks With One Click.
How to save time by updating ALL of your social networks at one time (Twitter, Facebook, Facebook Fan Page, LinkedIn and many other sites): Ping.FM
Simply enter your update and press send. Quick and easy. It will send a tweet, update your status, etc.
2. Shorten Long Links To Make Them Sharable/Tweetable/Prettier
So, lets say you create a blog post and it has a really long URL. For example: blog.randomwebsite.com/2010/archives/don’t-pet-fluffy-bunnies/seriously/no-fluff.html.
Yikes! That is not very Twitter friendly (over 140 characters) and it is just long and not great on the eyes.
So what do you do? Try Bit.ly.
Free and fun. It will shorten your link and you can track the clicks. Sweet!
3. Upload Video To Multiple Sites With One Click
Youtube, Vimeo, Yahoo! Video, Blip.TV, the list of sites to upload your video to is nearly endless. And let me tell you from experience, uploading sucks.
Tube Mogul allows you to upload videos to all of these sites with one click (you have to sign up for each site individually but that is one time relatively short time investment).
Get your videos in front of more eyeballs!

Tip: Know two people that should be introduced to each other? Send an email introduction.
It will build their business. It will build your business. The more you give and connect, the more it will come back around.
Karma in business isn’t fluffy bunny stuff, it is a business building machine.
Be a great connector be like Neil Patel at Quick Sprout or Bob Burg the co-author of The Go Giver or Ria Sharon of My Mommy Manual or Dixie Gillaspie affectionately known as Dixie Dynamite.
Try introducing someone once a week. I bet you will like it so much you will end up doing it much more often.
Here is an example:

When building your business smarter, faster, cheaper (or dumber, slower, more expensive) mistakes happen.
And that is more than fine.
Without mistakes, we entrepreneurs wouldn’t learn anything.
In this episode, we are discussing common mistakes made on social media sites by businesses and entrepreneurs.
Social media is no longer a buzzword and really isn’t an option for many businesses anymore. It is vital.
That being said, I get many frustrated emails from businesses and entrepreneurs not gaining traction or making real connections on social media sites including Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin (as well as many other smaller sites).
Here are my six:
1. Not Engaging (and I’m not talking about using this word as a fluffy-bunny filler buzzword). This means simply not talking to people and engaging in two-way dialogue.
2. Lack Of Personality. Corporate-speak doesn’t fly. Be a human. Don’t just talk shop.
3. No Patience. This is not an overnight success situation. It takes work. It takes time.
4. Forget To Cross Promote. Where else are you telling people about your social media accounts? Email signature? Signage at your store? On your website? Newsletter?
5. Shouting With A Bullhorn. Sell, sell, sell doesn’t work. People will burn out in a hurry. Promote others. Ask and answer questions. Introduce someone.
6. Fear Of Experimenting. Something doesn’t work? Try something else. Something does work? Try it again.
What are yours? I’m sure we would all value your thoughts in the common section.
Here are a few shared by viewers on Twitter and Facebook:
On Facebook:
Greg Jasnikowski: They try to sell their stuff too hard.
Chris Sicam: They send you a long message you don’t read in your inbox.
Kim Selby: Overthinking and overanalyzing tweets.
Angie Jones: Relying on it too much and not getting in front of people.
Kimberly Schneider: Always selling, never connecting
On Twitter:
@bizimpressions Selling their services before building relationships with potential clients. Not interested in needs, but in sales!
@mikestenger Forgetting to talk “with” and instead talking “at”. Engagement is crucial to an effective presence
@VinnySlavin I think businesses should be part of the social media community and not just a bulletin board.
@RizzoTees Bullhorn syndrome – all biz, no helping others, and (this is the key problem) NO interaction. That one is a killer IMHO
@judithcane Businesses who give up too early and aren’t consistent with their communication.
@ranwardo Use sm as yet another one way (push) communications vehicle.
@missy5ft2 Not interacting with customers.
@reman_controls Not responding to customers.
@DaveQuinn247 Businesses think that sm is about telling customers about a product/service. Its not, its about listening & engaging.
And one of the rock stars of the social world Peter Shankman: @skydiver not getting exec management buy-in, thereby not doing it to generate revenue, but rather, because it’s cool.
Leave your ideas below!

Objective Marketer is a killer social media marketing and I dare say branding system. Picture it as a central nervous system for your social media efforts allowing you to control everything (Tweets, Facebook status, etc.) AND measure it (analyze, create campaigns, etc.)

We are doing our very best to make RISE not only the #1 Non-Boring Resource For Building Your Business Smarter, Faster, Cheaper BUT also the most social and interactive show in the history of the world (or something like that). Today we are diving into viewer questions and you can always submit a question via email, Twitter of Facebook. You can find details on the Ask David page.
Dealing With Negabots
It is time for a few viewer questions today on RISE. The first one deals with negative people online. Yikes.
This question was submitted by two different viewers via Ask David:
“The haters/critics/accusers on Social Media – on Twitter, Facebook, Friendfeed, wherever. How to handle them – engage them directly? Ignore them? I just had it happen to me this week.” – Via @Rizzotees
and Mike S sent an email with a similar question (a little bit different, but similar situation ..and Mike I will answer yours more directly in an upcoming episode.
In this episode, I address the question, but the person online who handles criticism the best in my opinion is Gary Vaynerchuk. He is never accusatory and takes it head on.
The entrepreneurial takeaway is the more successful you get, the more haters will appear. How you deal with them can be the difference of becoming more successful or getting knocked down the ladder.
Collaboration
Question #2: Hey David! You have became one of my top 20 followers on Twitter and I would like to thank you for all the helpful information you have passed on to the community. a. Over the last couple months I have read and heard of alot of Entrepreneurs thinking of Collaborating with other Entrepreneurs/Companies to create a strong bond and at the same time market to the same public. What are your thoughts on this topic?” -Best, John Walsh Blackredxtreme-Action Sports Clothing www.blackredxtreme.com Online Clothing Store
This is another great question especially since business is historically viewed as competitive, not collaborative.
However, the online world has really changed this one. I give a personal example of this episode of working together with Small Biz Trends beginning in February.
We have a new winner. Check out the above episode to see if it is you. Didn’t win? Don’t fret. There will be many more giveaways. All you have to do is subscribe via email (and you have a choice whether you want it daily or weekly) to RISE and you will always be eligible.
If you are a RISE viewer and mention it when you visit Johnny at Johnny Londoff Chevrolet, you will get supplier pricing. No haggling or shenanigans. They are all about service and great cars, so I reached out to Johnny for a special deal to take care of our viewers and this one is absolutely killer.
How do you deal with negative people? What is your advice? How about collaboration? Has it helped you with building your business?

The youth market.
Those text-messaging, ADD, little crazy people.
Today we have not one but TWO bonus interviews with entrepreneurs that have this market cornered.
You will learn their secrets of how they built their businesses (and all kinds of other advice as well).
First up, is my good friend, author, blogger and “Youthologist” (cool term!) Vanessa Van Petten who was recently featured on The Real Housewives of Orange County. Vanessa has a tremendous business brain and also really understands Search Engine Optimization.
From SEO to the OC?!
You can also connect with Vanessa by checking out her great parenting website and Twitter.
Josh Shipp is an interesting character. Scratch that a HUGELY successful interesting character who is THE speaker for the youth market. He just gets kids (again in a non creepy way). Check out his style and his thoughts on leverage. How can you adapt part of Josh’s style for your business and marketing?
Josh has zillions of websites, but here is my favorite and a great place to interact with him. He is on Twitter as well.
And just in case you haven’t checked it out, I try to track down the very best and most interesting entrepreneur interviews for you on our Guests & Experts page including everyone from Gary Vaynerchuk to “The Millionaire Matchmaker” Patti Stanger.
Do you market to the youth market? What is your experience? Any tips? (We all benefit from your knowledge!)

Oh and yes, if you are already subscribed via email you are entered.

Johnny is offering $500 off this month due to the St. Louis Auto Show Discount. Anytime someone needs to be taken care of for a Chevrolet or ANY car (because they can get you anything), I’ve been referring to Johnny and he takes care of everyone like my brother and/or sister (I don’t actually have a blood brother and sister but if I did, this is how I would want them to be taken care of). Meaning, of course, like family. Johnny will take the time with you (which doesn’t happen often in the auto industry that you the owner) and he really is a great guy.
On that note, what do you think your next car will be? I’m still deciding…
Read More »Ahhh the media. Journalists. Reporters. Hosts. Producers. TV. Online TV. Magazines. Newspapers. Radio. Big Online Blogs. Small Online Blogs. Medium Online Blogs. Oh my!
But is media coverage important for entrepreneurs? You better freaking believe it.
Unless you hate:
-The possibility your business could be fully financed due to one article.
-People going to your website to buy products/services and find out more information.
-Making your grandma proud when you tell her to tune in, log on (tech savvy granny!) or read an article about you.
-Leveraging one media source to get into a bigger media source.
-Word-of-mouth marketing.
-Possibilities for new relationships and business partnerships.
-Being an expert.
Want some concrete examples (remember, if you want some fluff, go pet a bunny):
Maxine Clark: The Founder and Chief Executive Bear of Build-A-Bear Workshops raised millions of dollars for her business from ONE (yes, one) article. You can hear it directly from her in my interview with her.
“The Millionaire Matchmaker” Patti Stanger: Yes, THAT Patti Stanger from Bravo TV. She has a multi-million dollar relationship empire. How did her career become propelled? Media coverage in a well-known magazine. You can hear it right from the matchmaker’s mouth in this interview I did with her at the offices of the Millionaire’s Club in Los Angeles, CA. (Side note: Patti was on our show and then Oprah. It all start with The Rise To The Top *wink*)
While the Maxine and Patti stories included a bit of a magic bullet, the principles are replicable. Media is changing. Eyeballs might be more scattered. But the bottom line is being covered and offering your expertise can generate all kinds of delicious goodness.
Even if the source has just a few readers, those few readers can propel your business.
It used to be to get media coverage you had to rely only on expensive PR firms “pitching” (aka “annoying”) media. And they used…PRESS RELEASES (pause for gasp).
Now we live in a much more connected society. With the rise of social media and accessibility, there is a tremendous opportunities for even the littlest startups and entrepreneurs to get small and big media coverage.
You can do it yourself especially with the wonderfully, amazing, insert-more-positive-descriptive-words Help A Reporter, also
known as HARO. Think of it as your own media lead generator. Oh and it is absolutely free. All you have to do is sign up on their website and you will start getting three emails a day with reporters looking for sources (kudos on their new great website design launched this week). See one that fits you? Simply reply (and watch today’s episode for tips). See one that fits a friend? Pass it on (karma is always a good thing).
Peter Shankman, founder of HARO, and one of my favorite business heroes of all time and I sat down recently and he gave his tips for being quoted in the media right here.
So, you want to get quoted and covered? Today’s video offers some tried-and-true tips for getting your business involved in the new AND old media world.

Read More »Chris Miller, now of Yurbuds, and I go way back. Chris was doing it all the The Skandalaris Center for Entrepreneurial Studies at Washington University in St. Louis (my alma mater) and suddenly (seemingly overnight) left to join a start up called Yurtopia which makes Yurbuds.
He emailed me with an email containing more exclamation points than a 14-year-old on four Red Bulls. My interest was peaked especially since Chris saw hundreds, if not thousands, of start ups all the time due to his job, yet he choose to leave to help this one.
A few months pass….I start to hear some buzz of these really cool custom-made (yet super affordable) ear buds for your iPod. I heard they had a really cool process of fitting people (after all, Yurtopia is a unique technology company) and were raising money like crazy (nearly 1.5 million dollars).
Then I went to CES and became a believer. As you can see in the video here, it was jungle madness. My dad was trying them on and loved it with no prior knowledge of Yurbuds (he should have his own spin off show by the way). Everyone wanted to try to the process and nab a set (see below):
I promised Chris on camera (when I say “it’s on!”) we would do a feature on Yurtopia and Yurbuds.
Today’s featured episode is of course about a product and company with their ambitious founder Seth Burgett, but it is also a great story of inspiration for other entrepreneurs.
Why?
1. It is the classic big idea that solves a real problem (damn ear buds falling out, physical pain of working out with less-than-stellar head gear).
2. They are raised money in a down economy and are poised to raise a LOT more. They must be doing something right (*wink*). Even though they have raised money, they still market like an entrepreneur: Smarter, faster, cheaper.
3. Impressively, they already have a distribution model in place (online, Best Buy Mobile and some local runner’s outlets) will continue to expand.
Oh and yes, I scotch taped a microphone to my shirt because I lost the clip. We are like Macgyver up in here.
What do you think? What are your suggestions for Yurtopia Yurbuds?
Best part? The wow experience. You can hang out with Johnny himself who takes a TON of pride in each and every customer. They have all kinds of incentives going on this month including the St. Louis Auto Show Discount.
Read More »I get it. We entrepreneurs are busy. Between building businesses, family time, maybe a meal here or there, it can be hard to pump the breaks and pick up a book or e-reader.
In my opinion, there has never been a better opportunity to get ahead of the competition by reading especially with so many authors offering the “why” and the “how to” on pretty much everything from new media to business fundamentals.
This is a collection of books I’ve personally read and gotten a LOT out of and recommend to every entrepreneur. They are of different lengths and different styles but the commonality is they all make you think.
These authors and books leave your head spinning and in business a spinning head is often a good thing.
Many of these authors I’ve interviewed over the past year and they are all great people and not just amazing authors.
Below are links to the interviews and also each author’s book (via Amazon) and how to track them down on Twitter. And for the authors I haven’t interviewed yet, I promise I’ll track them down for you. Whatever it takes (another *wink*).

What do you think of when you hear the words “Search Engine Optimization” affectionately known as SEO?
For many entrepreneurs I’ve spoken with, the answers have been:
“What is SEO?”
“That is too techy for me!”
“My website has SEO.”
“I know it is important, but I don’t really understand it.”
Every entrepreneur (yes, every) needs to understand the basics of search engine optimization. It goes right along with marketing like an entrepreneur: Smarter, faster, cheaper. Why? Because of that little thing called search. Hopefully, customers are finding your website when they enter your company name; however, do they find your website if they enter key terms even if they have never heard of you?
For example, if your company is called Super Shoes. If people search “Super Shoes” they will probably find your website www.supershoes.com. But what if they search for cheap discount shoes? Or women’s shoes size 9? Does your website come up?
How to identify keywords and learn how to come up in searches for them is one of the many lessons I learned at Buzzhound Learning Lab.
A good friend of mine and mentor Norty Cohen is the brains behind the operation of creating a class that is easy-to-understand, hands on, and leaves the student enlightened with a little SEO magic.
I made a promise to viewers of RISE in the very first episode. I will never EVER promote a product or service that I don’t trust/use or would use.
When I took the class, I loved the low teacher-to-student ratio, the hands on experience (meaning you are behind a laptop they provide, not just listening to a lecture, and the quality of the instructors who not only talk the talk but also walk the walk. I left with a completely new view of Search Engine Optimization.
Even if you aren’t a tech rock star, which many entrepreneurs are not, there is a big benefit for you (and your team) to understand SEO just like there is a benefit to understanding social media, finance, marketing/advertising, etc.
Mastering online marketing means you have to climb several mountains of knowledge. Understanding how to think like a search engine is one of the big ones.
I worked out a special promotion where you will receive $50 off their full day class. Check out their website for more details and you can give them a ring (and talk to a real human!) at 314-951-9600.
What about you? What is your experience with Search Engine Optimization? Is it something you fully understand? Want to understand? Deem important?
