Seth Godin’s Most Revealing Interview Ever

You guys have to give YOURSELVES a pat on the back on this one. I’ve interviewed Seth on the show twice (here and here), and so I reached out to you guys for questions/topics you wanted him to discuss on his third go around on The Rise To The Top. Holy wow did questions come in. 642 questions to be exact.

Now, of course, I wasn’t able to ask all 642 (hah!) but I was able to narrow them down into the following categories of awesome:

…and much more. I’m so excited to bring this to you it is hard to even type these notes.

This is a MUST watch/listen. TRUST me.

Watch/Listen below and let me know what you think in the comments.

He chooses his words so carefully which is a sign of discipline and intelligence. He thinks critically about all his choices that some of us automatically make (such as should we spend time on Twitter or our thousands of FB friends)

All you hear nowadays is social media, and Seth could probably build a bigger fanbase, but he grabs the problem before it starts because it will wreck his productivity. His productivity tips are great!

    • David Siteman Garland

Absolutely. I wish sometimes I had that discipline :)

Amazing!!! No TV, No Meetings, Do Things I Am Afraid Of… Bingo!!!!

    • David Siteman Garland

      sha-boom!

He must have repeated the point of “doing things that you are afraid of” several times. Avoiding TV etc so that he can do things he is afraid of . . wow! That deserves a bit more understanding. David? Got a sentence or two on what you think that means? Perhaps he means “don’t just do the 9-5 (or anything else) because it’s safe. Do what you want even though it looks risky and you don’t know if you’ll make a living off of it.” What say you David?

I love that his final thought for us is to go “do work that matters.” It’s so easy to get caught up in the HOW we’re doing something that we forget WHY we started doing it in the first place.

    • David Siteman Garland

      Fantastic takeaway

Solid Q&A! Left me with the burning question… Where Does Seth Want to Go???

    • http://www.LipstickUnplugged.com/ Dee Copeland Patience

My guess is that he’s going to go where his passions and whim take him. Most free thinkers don’t plan that far ahead.

      • http://1000lifelessons.com Leo Tabibzadegan

        That makes sense! :D

Thank you for this great interview! I made a whole page of takeaway notes!

    • David Siteman Garland

      Woohoo full page :)

Incredible interview. Loved what he said about people needing to speak better (myself included). Also love this: “Almost no one I have ever met actually has trouble being creative. What they have trouble with is shipping creativity… That they discard their creativity in favor of safety.” I may have to print out that quote and keep it on my desk!

    • http://www.LipstickUnplugged.com/ Dee Copeland Patience

Me too! Loved that. I also like that he said that are people are often afraid to say stuff out loud because people will criticize you when he answered the question on naming our books. I often want to give something a name, but wonder if people will “get it” right away.

    • David Siteman Garland

      Boom! GREAT takeaway Alexa

    • Melodee Forbes

Absolutely Alexa, I think that was an aha and light bulb moment for me too!

  • http://www.smartcreativewomen.com/ Monica Lee

I love that Seth saw a problem within book publishing and has set out to experiment and change the rules. Innovation at it’s finest! Really, really good interview. I adore the creativity comment as well!

    • David Siteman Garland

Definitely, he is not one to conform.

    David,

Thank you so much for bringing us another helping of The Godin. I’ve been a fan of Zig ever since I was a kid; it seems like yesterday that I was sitting in the car with my dad at Kopp’s Frozen Custard, chomping away and listening to Zig’s cassette tapes. I was terribly sad to hear of his passing, but I realized today that Seth is another gem for our generation. He, and others like him, are still going strong, sharing their messages and shaping the world. I’m grateful for that, and for you, my friend, as you continue to educate and entertain The Rise Nation.

    • David Siteman Garland

Absolutely, it was a sad day. But, his message(s) live on.

  • Melodee Forbes

I loved this interview so much. So so so much. I had a lot of bingo, light bulb, ‘aha’ & ‘duh’ moments throughout it. The thing I want to commend you on is for respecting his time. You could’ve stuck another question or two in, but you didn’t. I’m not sure why but that meant a lot to me. I love how genuine you are, David. You inspire me.

    • David Siteman Garland

Thanks so much Melodee that made my day

This made me reconsider my life. Thank you, David, for bringing Seth on.

    • David Siteman Garland

      My pleasure, Ross!
