David’s Tips for Online Show Hosts: How to Narrow Down Your Topic Like a Champion

GREAT question came in on the ole FB (that’s Facebook ;)) from Jillian, who is working on starting her own online show:

“David, how specific/narrow of a niche does the show need to be about? Thanks!”

Ahhhh, an age old question. How specific does your online show need to be? Will you be more successful if you do a show that is (for example) about fitness, or about fitness for women, or about kettlebell training for women?

    Thanks David, fantastic response! And…not too bad of a job pronouncing my last name, still now you see why I most often go by my first name only, Jillian. Simple. Anyhow- this is great- useful & practical for sure and all previous comments have been helpful as well. I’m thinking of isolating one facet of my business and starting a show in that niche.

    2 other quick points, first of all I agree with your prediction (there’s a great Ted talk on similar concept) and second….the best and most important advice of all…..GET STARTED! Thanks so much David!

    Thank you for this. This is something I’ve been struggling with for a LONG time. I loove your advice to just START somewhere, and also combining narrowing down by who and what. Right now, my focus is overcoming depression in moms postpartum. I’m a little nervous (ok, very nervous), but this is what I know how to help and I’m passionate about. I just worry it’s too narrow. Any advice? Going to rewatch the video and take some notes. Thanks.

      I’ll have some more advice next week for sure. Great question. However, I DON’T think that is too narrow my friend as long as you have enough content and are super passionate about it.

      Ah! Great question. You are gonna die when you see how simple it is. I’ll do another video using another camera and show you what I use. Spoiler alert: entire setup I believe is less than $500!

    This all comes down to working out what your USP is and exactly who your target market is. Starting something that is broad and has a lot of competition should not be totally ignored though because if your show is good enough at least you know there is plenty of demand for what you are offering.

      Exactly, Scott. In an ideal world, we all can narrow down the focus right away…however, reality (for many) is just to start a bit more broad and then narrow
