Why You Need to STOP Obsessing Over the “Perfect Name” for Your Website/Brand/Product

So, gotta talk about a sticking point that drives me a little nuts. By sticking point, I mean something folks OBSESS over (if it is you, don’t worry…Uncle David is here to fix the obsession) and that is the name of your product/brand/websiteAnd trust me, I’ve gotten hung up on this before as well. And it REALLY held me back at certain points.

I can’t tell you how many times I get questions like this:

“Hey, David, should I call my website Option1.com or Option2.com or Option3.com?” or “Hey David! Got a new product coming out. But can’t think of a name. Any ideas?” or…grrr, the list goes on.

And I understand. Because naming is something very tangible. Meaning, a lot of us feel we can’t move on until we get the PERFECT name. Is that you? Raise your hand…it’s OK.

But here is what concerns me.

  1. There is no perfect name. Whew. It’s true. Your success will come based on what you do AFTER you pick a name.
  2. The “name obsessors”, unfortunately, many times get stuck. A month later when I ask about how that new website is coming or the new product, I get something like “um, still haven’t figured out the name.”

You know how I came up with the name for The Rise To The Top? I emailed five family members and my stepmom, Betsy, came up with it. Done!

Because the naming? That should be the easy part. The HARDER part is exactly what I talk about in today’s DSG TV video. Enjoy!

Watch below and make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments.

I use RISE partner LeadPlayer for DSG TV, which helps me build my list with video. Check ‘em out here.

PS: Not sure if you knew this, but my coaching program, The Host To The Top, has ONGOING ADMISSIONS. That means you can apply anytime and if you are a fit and we have room, you are totally in. One fun fact: The cost goes up for new applicants at the end of the month (February 28th), however everyone that is in the program before that date will be grandfathered in at the lowest price. So, if you have been procrastinating, now is a good time to check it out. And let me tell you we have a ROCKING group. Check out the details here: The Host To The Top.

You’re so awesome David! I love that you can just sit on the fall and still give awesome value and a powerful presentation. ;-)

I agree. So many people get stuck on this (been there, done that ), and so important to point out that it can change and evolve in time as you grow and as your business grows.

    Thanks for sharing this!

Definitely. If I can give a little kick in the butt, I’m happy to do it. Hope it helps!

    David,
I have suffered from this “disease” in the past and it definitely held me back…I’m glad I decided to just ACT and maybe clean things up as I go. Even if you are wrong when you act, at least you took action and moved forward…

You are spot on with this video!
    Thanks

    • David Siteman Garland

Absolutely. All about action. Not thinking about action.

Don’t obsess? But that’s my middle name.

So by now, you know how I roll. Glad I signed up for the Host to the Top since we’re covering this topic. I really want to create a good product that my audience would like, but am glad you told us to focus on building our list and engaging with them.

Between this video and the Host to the Top mastermind, it seems our focus should be:

    1. Grow Your List
    2. Engage with Your List
    3. Sell stuff that helps Your List

Haha, for sure Dee. I’ve got some more on this subject going out to Host To The Toppers via email. Make sure you confirm your email address (for the host to the top updates) as I think you are the only one where it says “confirmation pending” ;) Just want to make sure you get the email.

    Hi David!

Been a fan for a while. I got my good friend Charlie Brenneman hooked too. He’s a UFC fighter and is learning a TON from your stuff. http://www.ufc.com/fighter/Charlie-Brenneman

    Have a great week!

Holy moly. David better not mess up. That guy is huge.

      • jackzerby

        Haha, nah Charlie’s a nice guy :)

He talks a lot about how most UFC fighters who fight in front of millions of people have no idea how to build a personal brand, mainly because it’s such a new sport.

First response = Yes Sir. Whatever you say sir. :)

I agree. The main thing is to be himself and really let people in. He may be interested in http://renegadeswritetherules.com/. Book basically talks about how politicians, celebrities, etc. can use social media to humanize themselves and build huge followings. I heard that Amy Jo Martin’s speeches are awesome. I think she also did a TED talk.

Oh sweet, I’ll send him that link. He’d dig it. Thanks Dee!

In case he doesn’t like it, please tell him don’t hurt me.
