About Today’s Guest, Neil Strauss:

Where to start about today’s episode? As announced yesterday, the show is moving beyond business content and focusing on a variety of interviews with interesting people in all kinds of industries – from sports to entertainment.

Today is the kick off of the new era of The Rise To The Top with a VERY special guest. I couldn’t think of anyone better to kick off the new direction.

Neil StraussNeil Strauss is a multiple-time best-selling author with such books as The Game: Penetrating The Secret Society Of Pickup Artists, Emergency! This Book Will Save Your Life and many more, including coauthoring Jenna Jameson’s How To Make Love Like A Porn Star. His new book, Everyone Loves You When You’re Dead, chronicles some amazing (and revealing) moments during his incredible interviewing career for such publications as Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

In this interview, Neil and I discuss a whole range of topics from interviewing some of the world’s top celebrities, musicians and personalities, to finding his calling as a writer, to Neil doing sort of a psychological read on me (not kidding).

Enjoy!

Great interview David, I like how we got to learn more about Neil and YOURSELF.

Big hockey fan? Leafs? Habs? Who do you think is going to take it down this year? Oh, and I can so relate to doing the fake play by play as a kid…

    • David Siteman Garland

      Thanks, Jeff.

HUGE hockey fan. I bleed Blue…St. Louis Blues :)

In the playoffs this year, I liked Boston from the beginning out of the east. And if Nashville could get some goal scoring out of the west. Anyone but Vancouver :)

Oiler fan here David, so I definitely share your distaste for the Canucks… I missed most of the Bruins game last night but heard the OT was totally off the charts!!!

        • David Siteman Garland

I missed it too. ah the Oilers. You do have youth on your side :)

Love the behind the author (& presenter) insights-Thanks for doing what you’re doing and please continue…doing haa Thanks David

    • David Siteman Garland

Really appreciate that, George! I’ll keep it up for ya.

Neil’s explanation of Ali G’s interview tactics immediately triggered something in my mind, as a student about to graduate from law school. The same tactic is taught to all trial attorneys for cross examination. Warm up your witness, make them feel comfortable, that you’re there just asking them questions to which they can agree, agree, agree, then ask the harder stuff. They’ll be so used to agreeing, they won’t even realize the damage they’ve done. Guess psychology works on all levels.

    • David Siteman Garland

Mike- I definitely found that really interesting as well. Similar to, as you said, attorneys and I’m sure police :)

Neil is a genius dude. Loved hearing you vibe with him and yeah, he went to work on you!! -=) Great stuff bro!!!

Congratz on the new direction for your site too. A wise man once told me “Don’t become obsessed with the “How” to do something. Instead focus on the “what if” and the “why”.” Sounds like you’ve got your WHY in place like it was right between X and Z.

    • David Siteman Garland

Cheers, Jacob. He most certainly did. Very unique and interesting guy. Yup, I always live by the “why”! :)

    • David Siteman Garland

Thanks so much, Leo. You just made my day/night :)
