Maxine Clark has been the Chief Executive Bear of Build-A-Bear Workshop since its inception in 1997, its President from its inception in 1997 to April 2004 and has served as Chairman of its Board of Directors since its conversion to a corporation in April 2000. She was initially elected to the Board of Directors pursuant to the terms of a stockholders’ agreement which terminated upon the closing of the Company’s initial public offering in 2004. Ms. Clark was re-elected at the 2005 Annual Meeting of Stockholders. Prior to founding Build-A-Bear Workshop, Ms. Clark was the President of Payless ShoeSource, Inc. from November 1992 until January 1996. Before joining Payless, Ms. Clark spent over 19 years in various divisions of The May Department Stores Company in areas including merchandise development, merchandise planning, merchandise research, marketing and product development. Ms. Clark is a member of the Board of Directors of The J.C. Penney Company, Inc. and Chairman of its Governance Committee. She also serves on the Board of Trustees of Washington University in St. Louis and on the Board of Directors of Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Ms. Clark is Chair of Teach for America-St. Louis. She is also a member of the Committee of 200, an organization for women entrepreneurs around the world. Ms. Clark has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia.
