A bit about Justin:

In the summer of 2009, Justin Halpern created a Twitter account as a way to archive his father’s no-holds-barred, expletive-ridden words of wisdom. Within a month, @shitmydadsays became an Internet sensation. More than 2.5 million people currently follow Sam Halpern’s musings on Twitter and Facebook alone.

Justin’s first book, Sh*t My Dad Says (HarperCollins/ItBooks), a collection of essays about growing up with his unapologetically honest father, is a #1 New York Times bestseller.

Justin is also the creator of $#*! My Dad Says (WarnerBros/CBS), a sitcom starring William Shatner, Nicole Sullivan, Will Sasso, and Jonathan Sadowski. He serves as the show’s co-executive producer along with his writing partner Patrick Schumacker.

    Hey David,

    Loved listening to this as I too am a fan of Justin’s hysterical tweets – and have been for quite some time. I actually wrote a little post about him about a year ago (including my favorite quotes at the time) or so when I first discovered both Justin and another really funny twitterer and blog called Sleep Talkin’ Man. I think you’ll like that one as well if you’re not familiar with it :) .

    It’s quite incredible what word of mouth can do in such a short period of time through Social Media. I guess for once it makes the age old saying of “build it and they will come” true – for we all know that usually isn’t the case when it comes to this industry or any for that matter.

    The whole miracle of overnight success thing is one many people want to believe in when they start using SM but alas…But even here – it took some time to go from tweets to book to TV.

    One thing I do have to say is – my dad is unfortunately not the funniest guy I know although I’m sure he tries lol. But Justin and I do have one thing in common in that our fathers don’t really consider working on the internet a “real” job. Funny how some old school parents don’t associate passion with work – when in fact it’s what defines being a Lifestyle Entrepreneur.

    Anyhow – just wanted to thank you for this fun interview. I enjoyed listening to the discussion between the both of you and congrats to Justin on all he’s accomplished so far. Very impressive indeed! Best of luck to him on his amazing journey and cheers to the continued success.

    Got to admit it is a funny show and realistically I didn’t know that it was a book and Twitter account behind the show, so this was educational for me.

        Yeah, that is true with a lot.  I wonder how many people don’t know where the inspiration comes for a lot of TV or Movie Entertainment.  Very little of it is truly original :)
