The Rise Of The Oatmeal: Inside Matt Inman’s Comic Empire

Audio Only Player

About Today’s Guest, Matt Inman:

Matt InmanI remember the first time I laid eyes on the website of today’s guest (Matt Inman), The Oatmeal. Five hours later I couldn’t stop laughing.

Fast forward. Matt has built a comic empire online that is now becoming even more mainstream with the release of his new coffeetable-style book, 5 Very Good Reasons To Punch A Dolphin In The Mouth (And Other Useful Guides) (Amazon link).

I invited Matt on the show to talk openly about his comic empire. How did it get started? How does he run it? Does he have help? How has it become so popular? How is he making money (and how many ways has he tried to make money)?

Enjoy this super candid interview with Matt, and keep laughing.

David, right before you mentioned it I was going to tell you I liked the tagline, the ‘non-boring’ part. Good interview, nice to see how he used an existing nickname to brand his comics, his site and stick to his humor. I too love – and miss – Calvin & Hobbes too. Interesting to see the journey, the steps he’s taken to try to monetize, create his own business model to sell merchandise, etc. Thanks for sharing this.

Davina – Glad you like the tagline and the episode. Haha, pay attention over the next two weeks…more Calvin and Hobbes references, seriously.
