Check out the latest interviews with Chaz Dean.
Inspirational, trailblazing and passionate. Those are just a few words to describe celebrity hair stylist Chaz Dean, who has single-handedly transformed the beauty industry with the wildly successful WEN Hair & Body Care. The all-natural line has replaced the harmful detergents and sulfates in soap and shampoo with nourishing botanical ingredients that work wonders on even the most dry, damaged and frizzy hair.
A true pioneer in the green movement, Dean began working on formulations for WEN in 1993 and painstakingly tested the products for five years before the official debut. Clients like Jennie Garth and Nicollette Sheridan were some of the first to try Dean’s shampoo-free cleansers when he had a namesake salon in Bel-Air.
“Shampoos contain so many harmful ingredients from detergents, sulfates and surfactants that not only build up with continual use, but are simply bad for the scalp and hair,” Dean explains. “This is why so many women struggle with premature stripping of color, frizziness, dullness, dryness, hair loss and many other forms of hair damage.”
Chaz Dean Studio, a Zen-like refuge tucked away in a charming bungalow, is surrounded by bamboo and filled with the scent of eucalyptus and lavender. “I wanted to offer a secluded, intimate environment that would be a safe-haven for my clients,” Dean explains of the hair salon and neighboring Chaz Dean Lifestyle boutique.
Humble and dedicated to “changing the world one head at a time,” Dean chose to have no signage at his studio. Instead you’ll find ivy-covered walls, lush foliage, trickling fountains, calming sitting areas and hanging lanterns. The salon’s services include hair color and cuts, conditioning treatments and makeup application or lessons. “I want to ultimately reeducate everyone on how they can best cleanse and nourish the scalp and hair,” Dean says.
Born in Vermont and adopted at birth, Dean was raised in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California and Arizona before moving to Los Angeles in 1985. A renowned photographer who once trimmed the hair of dolls, siblings and friends, Dean decided to enroll in cosmetology school to further expand his creative abilities. After working at a top salon he struck out on his own and has since forged a path that has made him an international superstar.
With a dedicated and loyal celebrity following, it’s no surprise that Chaz Dean is one of Hollywood’s brightest shining stars. He is regularly featured on QVC and as the star of Guthy-Renker’s WEN Hair Care infomercial, which has broken sales records.
When he’s not focusing on developing new groundbreaking products and his personal clients at Chaz Dean Studio in Hollywood, you’ll find the Los Angeles resident cooking, doing yoga, hiking with his dogs and meditating.
